The Art of Russian Ballet

________________

If you’ve ever been entranced by the mystical world of Swan Lake or Sleeping Beauty, you have experienced one of the premier art forms of Russia, which is Russian ballet. Distinct from its predecessors from France and Italy, Russian ballet has become a formidable presence in the world of dance. Russian ballet is synonymous with some of the most well-known and well-loved ballets and ballet dancers in the world. The country is also home to the internationally renowned ballet company, the Bolshoi. As ballets like Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty continue to draw sold-out crowds in theaters in and out of Russia, it is clear that Russian ballet is an art form that has transcended time, geographic locations, and cultures.

Even though the tradition of ballet was brought to Russia by France, many experts consider Russia to be ballet’s second home country due to the country’s major contributions. Russia was instrumental in developing classic ballet techniques that are still taught in ballet classes around the world today. Russian ballet reached its highest point in the 19th and 20th centuries, releasing favorites such as Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Raymonda, and Don Quixote. You might be surprised by how many of these ballets sound familiar, proving how ground-breaking Russian ballet was at its time, and how relevant the practice remains today. Modern applications of Russian ballet include employing the Vaganova method that was developed in Russia in the late 1800s by Russian ballerina, Agrippina Vaganova. It is a classical ballet training system that has withstood the tests of time. The method rests on consciousness of the whole body and each of its parts. It was Vaganova’s belief that awareness of the entire body would bring greater harmony to movements and allow ballet dancers a greater range of expression.

Similar to any art form, Russian ballet takes an extreme amount of dedication and hard work to master. Dancers that have trained at the Bolshoi commit to 10-hour trainings, 6 days a week with teachers that push them to their limits. However, ask any of the Bolshoi’s previous students, and they would tell you that the Vaganova method dramatically improved their stamina, precision, and technique. Russian ballet in modern times is less limited and structured as it was in the past, meaning Russian ballet is a good foundation for all other types of dances. Dancers that dedicate time to learning Russian ballet can transfer these skills to more contemporary types of ballet or stay on the path of classical ballet training. The art of Russian ballet is truly a valuable practice that teaches children and adults skills of discipline, dedication, and persistence.
